Iranians find cure for LASIK pains

Iranian researchers have found a new treatment for the bothersome chronic pains which occur following LASIK corrective eye surgeries.
“Chronic pain, a rare complication of LASIK, was long believed to be the cause of operation-related eye dryness”, said Alireza Ghafarie, an ophthalmologist and a member of the American Academy of Ophtalmology.
Recent studies, however, have reported the condition in certain patients with normal tear flow and volume, which remained untreated with artificial tears.
Ghafarie added that failure in the repairing process of corneal nerves, injured during the operation, is the main cause leading to such postoperative pains. These pains are real and do not stem in psychological disorders.
According to the study published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, using tricyclic antidepressants have shown promising results in treating these pains in peripheral nerves.
LASIK, Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a procedure for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism with an excimer laser.
