Iran radionuclide to detect breast cancer

Iranian researchers have recently produced a highly sensitive radionuclide imaging technology effective in diagnosing breast cancer.
The new radionuclide has shown promising results in both imaging and diagnosing affected tissue with radio-immunoscintigraphy - a new technique for detecting cancerous cells in nuclear medicine.
PR81 is a specific antibody recognized by a mouse monoclonal antibody (anti-MUCI) raised against human breast adenocarcinoma; high concentrations of the marked antibody are reported in the tumoral tissue of the affected BALB/c mice.
Findings revealed that the high concentration of the marked antibody, 4 to 36 hours after the injection of the radionuclide can detect breast cancer with high sensitivity.
Tarbiat Modares researchers concluded that compared to the available diagnostic methods (mammography and biopsy), the new technique can more accurately detect breast cancer in its early stages, adding that the method is particularly helpful in cases suspicious of the condition.
